This piece makes one realize sounds can be of more dimensions. What we are so used to hearing is defined by quite two dimensional elements has only two primary directions such as in loudness (loud to quietness), pitch (high to low), frequency(high to low), etc. Even chords are multiple flat lines crossing other on a two dimensional space. These performers are truly sculpting the sound in multiple depths.

"French musician and composer Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates sonic works based on the sounds of everyday life in order to produce music that is utterly unexpected. For the record, Boursier-Mougenot is not an ordinary artist. He is a music devotee who believes in the visual potential of music and his sonic installations are a study into how we perceive, create and interact with music. Moreover, his work is an exploration of the way music (and sound in general) defines space whilst being defined by it. His latest work, ''From here to ear (version 15)'', is being shown at the HangarBicocca gallery’s Cube in Milan (October 6th-December 4th, 2011), a spectacular continuation of his widely acclaimed exhibition at the Barbican Art Centre during the spring of 2010. Inspired by his previous use of electric guitars and zebra finches, Céleste presents a new set up, this time adding percussion as well, where birds are the only protagonists. Like a tribe of experimental musicians, and without even being aware of it, the birds create some wonderful audio pieces, simply by flying around and eating the seeds that are placed on the instruments!"

Stuttgart City Library, The Opening

The Stuttgart Public Library has officially opened on 21st of Oct, 2011. The opening took place at the library lit in the backdrop of the blue sky shimmering with blue lights. I was invited for the opening along with other three to four hundred people, some of them, his Korean students, the embassy, and a few press from Korea. Prof. Eun Young Yi spent 11 years since his first winning entry in the open-European competition, with the concept of mufti-layered configuration (like "onion" he says) : outer facade in concrete and glass block, inner facade in glass, then the library stacks, and finally the "pantheon-like" space in the middle.

I believe this is one of the first public buildings of the scale that any Korean architect has built in Europe. Prof. Yi reminds us that fact clearly on the facade. Each facade carries the word "library" in 4 different languages. It is written "도서관" in Korean pointing to the east side signifying the knowledge in the East. (German in the north, Arabic in the south, and English in the west.)

In our time when the printed media is slowly disappearing, the library offers more than just rental / reading of books. It provides more the experience of navigating knowledge in a physical sense. For instance at the top, it accommodates "graphothek" (graphics + "thek" as in bibliothek meaing library) where one can rent original art works for less than three euro for every 6 weeks. This culture of graphothek / artothek is something quite amazing for the public to have full access to the art regardless of one's affordability.

At the party that lasted till mid-night (when finally the caterers had to head home), the mayor of the Stuttgart city came up to our table and speaks pleasantly about how Korea has performed unbelievable miracle of fast development and economic growth and he truly appreciates that model. (how modest for the city which is the birth place of Daimler-Benz) The city has spent 74 million Euro and has overcome many difficulties along the way. The sincere perseverance and co-operation of the city, the architect, and the library directors have brought about this unique public space.

The Ai Weiwei's show on his art / architecture opened on last Friday on 15th of July along the beautiful sunset of the Bodensee in Bregenz, Austria. Many art-loving crowd filled the show, and many reminisced about Ai Weiwei, who is now released but still prevented from public speech.

Sarah Moon was born in 1941 to a Jewish family in Vichy France.

Today, her unique photos are recognized all over the world. Moon often captures her subjects in motion, giving the shots an ethereal look. The faces of her models are often erased or blurred, their eyes closed. Some are even amputated or dismembered.

Sarah Moon’s often show parallels to 1930’s photography. There is almost no white used in her photos, many are damaged, scratched and blackened as if they were taken a very long time ago.

Her first publicity campaign was for Cacharel, with which she became a well-known feature of the fashion world. For 20 years afterwards, Sarah Moon shot campaigns for Chanel, Dior, Pirelli, Comme des Garcons, Sonia Rykiel and Christian Lacroix.

Saving Photography - Saving Memory from Japan Tsunami

This is a documentary called "Hope Relay" (7.7.2011) on KBS on Korean volunteers who went to help cleaning up the sites overtaken by tsunami. One of the rescue tasks were to collect and repair the photos found in the site to make an exhibition for the locals. The locals will be able to retrieve their priceless memory pieces through this exhibition. Though such a humble setting, these photos hanging in the temporary storage seem to provoke more than any other works. (all credit to KBS and the producer)

Central Saint Martins - Graduation Projects 2011

The old site of Central Saint Martins held its final graduate-exhibition in the last week of June 2011. Young creative designers showed their works in diverse media ranging from prints, textile, garments, accessories, to anything else imaginable. The old creative factory will turn into a hotel and the school will move to a new site in Kingscross. Why am i having such nostalgia for these old disheveled studio rooms knowing that it would be the last time to see them? I hope the new hotel has a smart way of preserving this cultural reminiscence.

How do we achieve enlightenment? What role is science given in our society, and what role myth? Do we need to find alternative categories for experience and alternative approaches to awakening consciousness? These questions are all raised by the artist Carsten Höller (born 1961, in Brussels) in his show in the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin.

Höller explores the myth of 'soma' - a drink with healing properties known among Verdic nomads in North India in the 2nd millennium BCE that promised enlightenment and access to the divine sphere, which was commonly used in rituals. The drink's main ingredient is no longer exactly known to us; ethnomycologists and philologists generally posit the fly Amanita mushroom as the substance responsible for its effects. Set against this backdrop, Höller has devised a fantastical scenario that stands at the crossroads between art and science, laboratory and dream, supposed objectivity and heightened subjectivity.

An oversized, three-dimensional tableau vivant unfolds before the viewers' eyes as they look down from a tribune. In the middle of this set-up, a hotel room is perched on a mushroom-shaped platform, giving guests the opportunity to spend the night in the museum and to dive into the world of soma.

It is a museum renovated from a pre-existing bunker. Made of 3m thick wall and ceiling, the building used as many functions: bunker, to banana storage, to many illegal party venu, to now finally a private museum. It needs at least 2 weeks of booking in advance to enter the museum.

Josef Schulz, born 1966, studied photography with Bernd Becher and Thomas Ruff. In 2001 he was named European Architectural Photographer of the Year, in 2007 he received a grant from the ZF Art Foundation, Friedrichshafen (Germany). He lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Biography from Art:21

Do-Ho Suh was born in Seoul, Korea in 1962. After earning his BFA and MFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University, and fulfilling his term of mandatory service in the South Korean military, Suh relocated to the United States to continue his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University. Best known for his intricate sculptures that defy conventional notions of scale and site-specificity, Suh’s work draws attention to the ways viewers occupy and inhabit public space. In several of the artist’s floor sculptures, viewers are encouraged to walk on surfaces composed of thousands of miniature human figures. In “Some/One,” the floor of the gallery is blanketed with a sea of polished military dog tags. Evocative of the way an individual soldier is part of a larger troop or military body, these dog tags swell to form a hollow, ghost-like suit of armor at the center of the room. Whether addressing the dynamic of personal space versus public space, or exploring the fine line between strength in numbers and homogeneity, Do-Ho Suh’s sculptures continually question the identity of the individual in today’s increasingly transnational, global society. Do-Ho Suh represented Korea at the 2001 Venice Biennale. A retrospective of the artist’s work was held jointly at the Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle Asian Art Museum in 2002. Major exhibitions of Suh’s work have also been held at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris (2001), the Serpentine Gallery, London (2002), and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO (2002-03).

Hosted by S AM (Swiss Architecture Museum. Basel). Peter Zumthor held a lecture in the Hall 2 at the Basel Messe on 13th of June 2009. He introduced 4 projects (the chapel for farmers, Kolumba museum, and 2 other upcoming projects in Norway) through a very straightforward anecdotes. One of the most interesting story was how beautifully detail elements in the farmer's church came about in total accidental process. The client(a farmer) had recommended using old pipes from brewery he received from a neighbor. Zumthor took them to use it as a concrete tie, which created several light holes in the finally poured concrete wall. As they caused major draft in the chapel, someone recommended using glass balls to fill those holes. Zumthor said he will not take credit for that part of the detail of the chapel. This was a work in the Scope during Art Basel. What seems to be a smiling face in the first glance is in fact a beat up face swollen to a point it gained an ironical facial expression. Apologies on missing out on the artist name.

It was a dark room with a 2 beams of light which cut across the air to the other side forming a kind of outline. occasionally thick smoke / steam was diffused, and the light beam revealed only a section through the moving smoke.

"The convergence of the Malvinas and Brazil currents causes temperature and salt concentrations to vary a great deal within a relatively small area. The flowing and jostling of the ocean waters creates pockets of sinking water and upwelling water. Upwelling draws nutrient-rich water from lower layers of the ocean up to the surface where microscopic ocean plants—phytoplankton—live. The influx of nutrients is a watery fertilizer, and phytoplankton concentrations increase. The chlorophyll and other light-catching pigments make the colorful patterns on the ocean surface."

on the way back from the beautiful lake city, there was somewhat awkward building with 2/3 of its facade in exposed brick /stone and the other 1/3 plaster with patterns on it. the delineating line between the bare brick and covered plaster was so clearly designed and appropriately proportional within the frame of the building itself.
